Citizens Police Academy
The City of Carbondale Police Department offers the Citizens Police Academy for those citizens who want to get a first-hand look at the work your police officers.
The Academy is a 12-session, three-hour a week course, during which instructors from the City of Carbondale Police Department, Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, and the Jackson County States Attorney’s Office present a wide variety of topics on law enforcement and the Criminal Justice System in order to provide the public with a comprehensive view of police work.
The topics include firearms familiarization, patrol tactics, gangs, drug enforcement, special response team operations, canine patrol, criminal law, crime prevention, media relations, crime scene processing, investigations, and others.
The City of Carbondale Police Department has offered the Citizens Police Academy since 1994 and the program has exceeded over 500 graduates in its 14 year history. It continues to be one of the most popular programs conducted by the police department.
The Academy is offered every Fall, beginning in September and is free of charge.
Anyone interested in applying for the Academy must complete an application which involves a criminal background check. Class size is limited to 20 participants, and classes fill quickly, so contact the police department as soon as possible if you would like to apply.
