D.A.R.E.

DARE CarDrug Abuse Resistance Education, commonly referred to as D.A.R.E., is a drug prevention program provided to local schools by the City of Carbondale Police Department. The D.A.R.E. curriculum focuses on peer resistance training, self concept improvements, and value judgments about respect for the law and personal safety. The long term goal of D.A.R.E. is reduction in the supply of controlled substances as a result of reduced demand, more positive identification with police officers, improved decision making and an overall reduction in criminality.

The City of Carbondale Police Department has trained D.A.R.E. officers who provide the D.A.R.E. program at the third and fifth grades in Carbondale schools. D.A.R.E. is taught by a uniformed police officer in each class with the classroom teacher present. D.A.R.E. is supported by our local schools, and warmly received by parents, students, teachers and school staff. The D.A.R.E. officers always look forward to teaching D.A.R.E. and being able to have such positive contact with the youth of our community.

DARE GraduatesD.A.R.E. graduations are important events, which include City government and community member speakers, as well as diplomas and a reception following the event. They are attended by police and school district representatives, City officials, as well as the families of the graduates.

This program is a community supported, collaborative effort. The D.A.R.E. Board of Directors, composed of various community leaders, manages funding and oversight of the program.

If you would like more information regarding this program please contact Officer Randy Mathis at (618) 457-3200, ext. 428 or email: rmathis@ci.carbondale.il.us.
