Internet Safety

The information superhighway can lead you to a whole new world of information and communication. Like any highway, there are dangers that need to be identified. There are several ways criminals use the Internet to make you a victim. Some ways include “get rich quick” schemes, prize schemes, viruses, hacking, “Phishing”, harassment by electronic communication, indecent solicitation of our children and many more.

The following is a list of tips to help you protect yourself while navigating the information superhighway (internet).

Anyone can say anything on the Internet. You have virtually no way to prove or disprove what they are telling you. A good rule to follow is “Don’t believe anything you see.”

Never give out personal information to anyone over the Internet.

Be careful of what you put out on the Internet, whether it is something you write or a photograph you decide to share. Remember, once you send it, you can never take it back.

Be careful of on-line business opportunities. If it seems “too good to be true” it probably is.

Keep the computer in a room where you can monitor your child’s use.

Become familiar with the chat/text message shortcuts for words (acronyms).

Discuss the dangers that can be found on-line with your child.

Check out the links on the City of Carbondale Police Department Web site for more information about using the Internet safely. For children, there are safety related games, such as Danger Rangers, where you and your children can have fun while learning about common everyday dangers and hazards to avoid. Whether they help Sully the Sea Lion find matching signs or help Squeeky the mouse identify household items that are burn hazards, they are able to learn and have fun on the Internet safely. Children can also visit Net Smartz Kids to play Clicky’s Quest or Nettie’s Chalk Board Challenge.

If you would like additional information on Internet safety please call Community Resource Officer Randy Mathis at (618) 457-3200, ext. 428 or email: rmathis@ci.carbondale.il.us.
