06-17-13 Web Release- Traffic Crash

On 06-16-13, at 1:43 p.m. the City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the intersection of West Chautauqua Street and South McLafferty Road in reference to a report of a traffic crash involving a motorcycle and three motor vehicles.  During the course of the investigation it was determined that a motorcycle traveling northbound on McLafferty Road, driven by Kenton J. Barrick, age 25 of Marion, failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with a vehicle travelling eastbound on West Chautauqua. The impact from the initial crash caused the vehicle to collide with a third vehicle, which then collided with a fourth vehicle.  Barrick and his passenger, Courtney A Hamilton, age 22 of Carbondale, sustained major injuries and were transported by Jackson County Ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.  Barrick was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Hamilton was transferred to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment for her injuries. The driver and passenger from the second motor vehicle involved in the crash were transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where they were treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into the incident is continuing.
