CARBONDALE MAN SENTENCED FOR UNLAWFUL USE OF A DEBIT CARD AND

FAILURE TO REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER

Michael C. Carr, Jackson County State’s Attorney, announced today that a Carbondale man entered a plea of guilty Thursday, September 26, 2013, to Unlawful Use of a Debit Card and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender and was sentenced to prison.

Thomas L. Hudson, 49, of Carbondale, IL, who was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with Unlawful Use of a Debit Card and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, plead guilty pursuant to a plea agreement and was sentenced to serve 42 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections for each offense.  The defendant will serve a one year period of Mandatory Supervised Release upon his release from the Department of Corrections.

On June 9, 2013, the Carbondale Police Department began an investigation when the victim reported unauthorized charges being made with her debit card.  The victim indicated that her debit card had been stolen and noticed unauthorized charges were made at two different Carbondale businesses.  Officers obtained video surveillance from the businesses and through the investigation, the defendant was identified as the suspect.  Officers also learned that the defendant was a sex offender after having been convicted in Cook County for Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.  The defendant’s last registered address was in Cook County.  The defendant was convicted for failing to register his new Carbondale address within 3 days of establishing residence in Carbondale.

This investigation was conducted by the Carbondale Police Department.  Assistant State’s Attorney Casey Bloodworth was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
