08-14-14 Web Release –“Sign and Drive” Law

Governor Pat Quinn signed a new law to end the practice of police accepting a valid driver’s license as security for certain traffic citations in Illinois.  The “Sign and Drive” law will allow motorist to keep their identification if issued a traffic citation during a traffic stop and be released with their signature on appropriate traffic citations.  This law goes into effect on January 1st, 2015.  The Carbondale Police Department will comply with this law when it goes into effect in 2015.  The Carbondale Police Department will continue with its normal policies and procedures of accepting a driver’s license as a security for appropriate traffic citations until 2015.
