Leading Living and Learning Camp
Leading, Living and Learning Camp
The City of Carbondale Police Department, along with the SIUC Police Department Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale and the Carbondale Park District, will be working together to provide a two-week summer day camp for Carbondale Youth. The camp will be held Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting June 14 and ending June 25, 2010. Twenty-six disadvantaged children between the ages of nine and twelve years old will be selected to participate in the camp. The camp will be at the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale, with other activities held at various Carbondale Park District sites.
Camp activities are designed to improve self-esteem and confidence and to teach life skills and teamwork techniques. Another goal of the camp is to break down barriers and build relationships between police officers and children in our community.
Camp topics will include the GREAT Program Summer Component, the GREAT Program Expanded Activities, Internet Safety, Think First Program through the Center for Comprehensive Services, and more. The participants will also participate in a service project to "give back" to the camp and community.
The participants will be provided lunch each day of the camp and have several opportunities to go swimming. The final day of camp concludes with a graduation ceremony in recognition of the participant's achievements. Graduations are important events, which include City government and community member speakers, as well as certificates of achievement.
All participants must become members of the Boys and Girls Club prior to participation in the camp.
